Just found out that in the US 'Treadmark' was called 'Skidmark' *snigger*

I was going through the yojoe archive recently looking for custom fodder and laughed at Skidmark - never realised it got renamed - if it were me I'd have let that one slip under the radar.

Sticking with lost in translation there's a popular clothing company over here called "Bum Equipment", the words splashed proudly over everything they make.

Is Bum not a US/Canuck word? Surely not? I find Fanny pack very amusing too.

Well on the mainland it pretty much always means tramp, but the proper meaning of bum is known here on Craggy Island, which sometimes seems to drift further east into the Atlantic than the map suggests.

Fanny - me too. I go all Finbarr Saunders when someone says something like "Ooh my sore fanny" (usually at the ice rink).

Meertoh, yep, most of my neighbours sound more Irish than Canadian. The local store owner visited Co. Kerry and insists that people would not believe he wasn't from Ireland.

The odd thing is that, although more people here have origins in England than Ireland, plus the strong colonial link until '49, the Irish heritage is the one that seems to dominate.

Really is Craggy Island though. Where else would the local school use the meant-for-emergencies broadcast phone system to advertise a tea party?

I know what you mean, Monkfish. The deep south of NZ was mostly colonised by Scots. Billy Connelly reckons that when the Scots migrated they wanted to find as dreary a place as Scotland. They discovered Dunedin, the most miserable place in NZ. Anywho, the Southerners still have a Scottish twang. Roll their R's and all that kinda thing. If you watch the "Worlds fastest Indian", you'll see what I mean. Hopkins does a pretty good take on a southern Kiwi accent.

As fer the Irish, the buggers get everywhere. Even I have a strong Irish heritage. My wife is also of Irish descent, and believe me you don't want to piss her off.
