Just noticed this on my series 1 helmet variant German.

Makes me think more that these variants from s1 with painted bits and bobs were the very early versions the salesmen had to show to prospective customers!

You have far too many toys, Steve. I'm surprised you didn't notice this earlier.
It might explain a few things though. How many S1 paint variants are there?

I make it 42 different figures in Series 1 - most of which are paint or transfer variants.
There are three Germans -
1 - Blank helmet & black chinstrap
2 - Blank helmet and grey chinstrap
3 - Helmet decals
And yeah Steve, I agree... they certainly seem to be the earliest, though perhaps too numerous to be solely salesmen's samples. They are the earliest phase in AF history though, Phase 1a in my mind.
