i loved TG as kid (watched it three times in a month). rewatched it in my early 20s at college and realised it's a pile of shite. Tomcats were expressly designed to engage targets at long-range with the Phoenix missile and then at medium range with Sparrows. they'd NEVER get into a close-range gun-fight like they do in Top Gun.

and it's SO gay

it's basically a 2 hour recruiting ad for US Navy aviators grafted to a crappy romance and bromance too.

it's also the single biggest reason why i love A the F-14 Tomcat, B the Skystriker and probably C why my 'rents bought me the Skystriker for xmas in '88.

I always associate the Tomcat with the old Afterburner coin op arcade game..& any time I'm in a really good mood the music from Outrun starts to play in my head mainly Splash Wave

Isn't that the point of the Top Gun school to teach pilots how to deal with close combat because Vietnam taught them that you will always need to know how to dogfight.

Yup your right it is. I've met someone who graduated from the first course, he was also the first in his class to shoot down a MIG when he went back to Nam.
When confronted by a difficult problem you can solve it more easily by reducing it to the question. How would the Lone Ranger handle this?

meh, still seems like a load of bollocks to me. what's the point of close-range gunfights when your missiles have 60, 30 and 5 mile ranges?

Because sometimes you get caught with your pants down and guns are the only option.

Not only that but if you fired all your brackets of missiles previously guns are the only thing left that can be used.
