Peroxide

Post by Chopper »

Righto. I got a luverly used snowmobile from Mr Dawson. Low KM's but it's been in the weather and gone yellow. I've been bleaching the front part for 3 days and quite surprised in that it has got quite noticeably whiter. It still has a way to go tho. I scored 6% peroxide from my neighbour and plan to give that the treatment and see if it improves any.

If it goes OK I may subject Greeny, my parts Cobra trooper, to the treatment too. Anyone here used peroxide on their troops?

Also if anyone has a copy of the sticker sheet for a series 1 snowmobile, I'm going to be in need.

Three days? Hydrogen peroxide should work quicker than that! Did you put the jar in the sun?

See my original posting from October 26th:

Exactly!

Hydrogenperoxide bleaches out the yellowing. It hardly eats the paint, coloured parts might get a little duller when submerger longer periods. Again, experiment!

And I found the original postings I was referring to:

No mate, 3 days of bleach, haven't tried the peroxide yet. Missed that post too I think ;-)

Don't use bleach! It really f*cks up the plastic! Hydrogen peroxide does miracles and leaves alone the structure of the plastic. Hydrogen peroxide can be found at the local chemist, trailer park or any 80-ies hairdresser!

Or my neighbours ;-) Is there any "how to" guides kicking around? I've seen heaps of before and after shots and I get the basic idea but I'd hate to f*ck something up because I didn't take the time to read.

Via http://www.thetf.net/forum_posts-TID-13204-PN-1.htm you will get access to all the information you'll be needing.

The basic idea is:
  • Get h2o2 (35%)
  • Remove all screws etc. from parts
  • Put plastic in jar
  • Add h2o2
  • Put in sun (it speeds up the reaction)
  • Wait
  • Rinse off
Try this out on some junk parts first to get the hang of it!

Thanks for posting this :-D
I'll give it go on a old yellow Storm trooper I purchased to experiment on, it sound like this works best in warm sunny weather so I'll make it a summer holiday project.
More news, as its made, from new Action Force!

As a follow up, it works. The series 1 Ski mobile looks a hell of a lot whiter and the stickers haven't come off either. UV index was up in instant cancer territory today, sitting on about 40 degree's. Perfect for the job.

I may give it another dose tomorrow. Its quite amazing, about 12 hours and about 75% of the yellowing has gone.
