Stirling? Yeah, but he founded the SAS. In any case from my googling I've discovered the most common high ranking SAS soldier on the front line is USUALLY up to WO. And the same still applies, if a Trooper is designated mission leader, he is the boss and calls all the shots. Everybody else, regardless of rank, has to follow his orders. Commissioned Officers tend to be rear echelon and not get involved so much in front line activities. there was a major in the WW2 SAS... and there are officers in the HQ troop...
Have a read of "Ghost Force" tho, Sundance. Its a mind blowing read, best book on SF I've ever read.
