Brendan Fraser's character is not Gung-Ho. his character's reportedly a sergeant o'connell, tying GI Joe to the Mummy franchise.

it was in a variety of articles i've read. including the one on wikipedia.
Brendan Fraser as a yet-unnamed motorcycle-riding Sergeant. It was initially rumored he would play Gung-Ho, but those rumors turned out false. [23] According to Fraser himself, he plays a motorcycle-riding sergeant who is the descendant of Rick O'Connell, Fraser's own character from Sommers' The Mummy film series. [24]
Brendan Fraser plays a motorcycle-riding sergeant, Gung-Ho, whom he dubbed a "refugee from the Village People". Fraser stated "i'd like to think of him (the character) as a descendant of Rick O'Connell from The Mummy, thus linking both of Sommers' films.[38] Fraser said that he asked to have a cameo in the film after producer Bob Ducsay told him that the project had been green-lit.[39]

Sundance, the second paragraph you got refers to Fraser's chara as Gung-Ho rather than denying (I guess it's a mistake)

Then :zartan: does descend from Imhothep? Then his chamaleonic powers could be based on residual magic inherited from his ancestor ;-) .
