Truly dreadful BAF moments

Post by The Baron »

What is the worst BAF moment? Is it the seizure of the Fleetway printing press by Cobra forces? The occupation of London? Could it be the Cobra Conversion itself? There are certainly plenty of miraculous escapes and piss-poor targetting, but for me, the all-time turkey has to be The Terror Of Cobra:

Non-stop dribble from start to finish. Duke should be court martialled for not capturing Destro and Cobra Commander in the final scene, but no, instead we get a wry grin and a "Chortle! Those pesky world terrorists!". Dreadful.

Worst moment has to come from the Cobrs era.

Was almost as if sometimes they were just wanting to churn out cheesy story rather than quality, worst has to be when Cobra take over the printing press.

Although you can't blame Cobra for the renegade Red Shadows joining the Nazis secretly hiding Hitler in the jungle...

When Zartan infiltrates the AF base full of honky-tonk Duke clones and then forgets to inform Cobra Commander, or even to remember that he did. Caveat - haven't bothered to re-read to check that happened, just from memory. On that note, noone ever did tell us where the AF base was.

Or when Snow Job goes on mission in the arctic only to be surrounded by ?Cobra penguins. Although that wasn't the writer's fault ... perhaps.

Meantime the "never a foot backward, never a foot wrong, be slow, be steady, be sure" monologue of laz-trooper's path to glory could be tedious. Recondo also was pretty much Ozzie-Redundo whenever he waltzed onto various pages with his swag and billabong clich?s.

And anytime Scarlett and Duke looked out of the window and moaned about Zartan and his "gills", and Redundo joining the dawn chorus muttiering into their moustaches about "a man with a box of junk."

Other lows accurately been mentioned. Their must be more. Most of Cobra BAF era is codswallop, although the comic-biopic of the Baroness wasn't too bad, that Junkyard-Scrap Iron dogfight was alright for the long summer days of 85, seem to remember the fictitious Skull Squadron Foxbat stuff passing the time favourably too. But Desert Strike/Op Bloodhound that era veritably wasn't. 85-86 were never 83-84 in their full-on Shad slotting glory.

As a kid I loved that Hitler story. Well no I didn't I just loved the fact that the old Action Force was back!!

Cobra penguins... HA!!!

Doesn't it say in one story that Flash is a member of the Green Jackets or something, then in his background one he is some electronic whizz pirate??

Yeah, the Shad-Nazi tag was a very welcome blast from the past at the time. So was that SAS vs. Firefly malarkey.

However, in the old days the Bludd and die Grafin would have been slotted for dastardly crimes against muppetry at the very least as they minced through the jungle.

The first appearance of the hissy-fitting Cobber Commander was probably a low too. The transition from Blades chewing up Shad convoys in the outback one week to preening Cobra posturing in pretty much the next was, if not protracted, nevertheless excrutiating.

See now, I loved World Enemy No. 1, but for all the wrong reasons. At the time we had no idea the Baron's days were numbered and that GI Joe were preparring to invade. Those first instalments were truly gripping as a Shadow fan, with what seemed as a terrible risk being taken on the part of the comic writers. But being faced with the impossible choice of rewriting all of the established universe in a matter of weeks I think they did an exceptional bit of retconning.

But yes, the returns of SAS and Z Force were always heartening amid the latter Apple Pie drudge. The Black Major refused to die for Palitoy, and this cemented his legacy for me. I really hoped that Red Jackal would resurface and turn renegade during the School For Snakes story but alas. A bolder move would have been for the comic to start killing off these older toys, but left as it is it's wide open for reloading...

World enemy Number 1 was great, except that Red Jackel started talking, and went from a character we never saw to second in command of the most evil terrorist organisation the world had seen after the shadows.

Woulda been great if some of the old members could have gone out in a blaze of glory like Haggis did in Claymore!!!

Jack the Bionic Hat did indeed do not only a lot of jawing but a lot of walking if I remember correctly!! Tracking down numbered accounts etc. for his Baronial Cobber-Contradiction eminence. At the time wondered where it was all going... certainly not to Cobber-"Ind...." hell.

Meantime, yeah, if the original BAF crew had gone down in a blaze of glory like Haggis there would have been a lot of refugees, a definitively slotted Cobber-Commander included one presumes...
