I was just kidding with you!, the small machine robos were cool for the time, but I think the cartoon, although bringing them to life, made the pale in comparison to the TFs.Thundershot wrote:Hey,
Some (not all mind) of the Gobots are pretty good,I like that sort of Matchbox toy car feeling they have..what I really like about them is the fact that Bandai stuck to their guns & kept producing the toys out of good qaulity materials, using die-cast parts & real rubber tyres, long after Hasbro had started cost cutting with cheap plastic parts. They're simple & well crafted toys if you look @ them with a open mind.
Don't get me wrong I love the early Transformers (I stuck with the U.K. comic right from the beginning all the to the last issue), but didn't buy any more of the toys about half way through the 3rd year as, in my eyes the toys just stopped looking like real trucks & cars, turning into strange plastic looking "stuff", take the Jump starters for instance, Jet fire & Shockwave are super cool looking toys, but then Takara didn't have anything to do with the designs.
I wish the Gobots hadn't changed their brand name from Machine-Robo & had been sold in the same nice little Matcbox style boxes as the Japanese one's had been..The stupid names & poor marketing Tonka came up with didn't help either.
This site has lots of good stuff about Gobot's,as well as Transformers & other toy robot lines,& the guy does good & honest reviews of the toys whatever series or line they're from: http://counter-x.net/index.php
I've only got one Rock-lord,but in my defence, it was part of a job lot, & in really top notch condition.
my main complaint with gobots was some of them didn't have heads/faces- the larger VW beetle and the semi-truck guys. Most also were not able to or did not come with weapons, and the other problem was that they were quite fragile and broke more easily- I had a couple of the Harrier ones and the tail fins snapped off.
Agree the Tfs did become chunks of plastic, but presumed it was all post movie so they were all cybertronian in origin.
Rocklords is a completely diff thing- why would you want a robot that transformed into an immobile piece of stone? (Paris Hilton could star in this movie remake!)

Marketing wise the Transformers got it spot on, lots of good background & real storyline, it felt like you where buying into a whole universe.Dispite Tonka's Gobot line coming out first, & believe it or not,in the 1st year the U.S line sold better than Transformers did..Gobots just felt like a quick cash in,with little or no thought put into the characters.
You've really gotta take you're hat off to Bandai for choosing some unusual subject matter as well, like the Saladin armoured car, Tornado fighter & Zero-Zen, as you can tell I go for the millitary ones..
I'm looking for the A-10 Thunderbolt, when I was a kid the real things flew over the house all the time..really low, that howl of the engines was a noise you never forget.
I've been told that the pilots would practice runs using Tractors as target "tanks"..( I live in the fens, with lots of big corn fields) I don't know how true that was but it was fun watching the tankbusters pulling really tight turns...now we get the Euro Fighters, but they fly too high to really see, but boy are they loud!

gobots are pony. if you want a transformers site that isn't afraid to admit stuff isn't always great and to diss stuff, visit transformers.wikia.com the transformers wiki. it's frquently hysterical. ESPECIALLY the all-rhyming page on Wheelie.

I kind of preferred gobots in a way. Never saw the cartoon but i liked the chunkiness and clunkiness of them... Also had a silver rock transformer which I swapped for a zoid at school...
