AF + Cobra Characters

Post by steve »

Ive got no problem with Duke et al in terms of characters, I do have a problem with the way some stories used these characters.

I read one tonight (not on the site yet) where Duke and Scarlett were piloting Sky Strikers, and Zartan also later stole one and flew off in it. It was this reason that I disliked some of the later stories, characters were not used sensibly.

On the other point about reconciling AF and Gi Joe back stories it would be tricky. But, the only things that would present problems are the back stories of Cobra Commander, Destro and the Black Major as they are the only ones who know the full story of this version of his origins.
It's good to be back

Well, I for one was gutted by the changeover, to the point where I stopped buying the toys, but not the comics!!! I guess your reading hasn't taken you as far as World Enemy No. 1, because this actually deals with these very issues. Dont worry, I'm not gonna spoil it!

I'm just uploading Revenge Of The Red Shadows and Operation Stubborn, two stories which feature the old Action Force squads in the new Joe setting, a move that I always thought of as an act of defiance by the comic creators, having worked so hard to create such strong characters.

And as for that Zartan story, The Terror Of Cobra, that could quite easily be swept under the carpet as it was from a Summer Special, and is very silly indeed. In fact, now that I think about it, there was also a dreadful story where the SAS squad were captured by a reanimated Adolf Hitler...

I havent read that many of the US strips, but I'm pretty sure that these adventures will fit in quite nicely amongst them, as they mostly feature solo characters. Maybe these stories could be peoples dreams? Or is it that the UK is in fact a Parallel Universe?

Weighing In On the Continuity Issue...

Post by FrustratedPilot »

I've been working on a sort of unified continuity for a while. My thinking is centered on the concept that the Joe Team and ActFor are/were allied organizations working independantly until "Blood Day" (when Baron Ironblood instigated the UN reaction against the Red Shadows).

But I'll gladly dispose of the idea that Ironblood and Cobra Commander are one and the same. It's bad enough that Cobra Commander has two irreconcilable origins on the American side! The concept that one became the other out of convenience is a weak one. Besides, it could make them archrivals and since there ultimately was a war between the Shadows and Cobra, so be it! (Another idea--as a result of the Blood Day blunder, the Black Major and Shadows loyal to him overthrew Ironblood in a coup d'etat!)

As for the Baroness...surnames and titles are independant of one another. There is really no conflict in her origin. Witnessing the murder of her beloved brother drove her over the deep end, especially as her father seemed to be apathetic about it. It gives her all the more motivation to turn anarchistic and bloodthirsty.

I find the Marvel UK series more of a continuity problem than the Battle version...but this can be overcome.

I've already done a timeline of the American comics continuity, and I've been working on a similar document about the Battle and Marvel UK storylines. (I had gotten about 2/3rds through the Battle series when the Blood For the Baron! site went down.) I'll share my work once I'm finished.

Nice to have you on board, Pilot!

It would be great to link all of the continuity into one massive Universe, the best solution I can think of is that Baron Ironblood was cloned (in the Kraken lab!), leading into the Cobra Commander storyline.

I confess I'm not up on my Joe reading yet, I've downloaded the set from http://www.suprnova.org, soon as I've caught up I'll give you a hand (if you like). I can't wait to see it!!

Cobra Commander

Post by FrustratedPilot »

If we link Ironblood and Cobra Commander too closely, then were does Billy (now "William") come from? I prefer the Occam's Razor, American comics origin for Cobra Commander--up to a point (too many coincidences intertwining with Snake-Eyes'). I do not accept the cartoons/Joe The Movie origin at all (C.C. being a non-human survivor of an intelligent reptilian race). Why would anybody want to side with a cause that is centered on genocide for all human beings? (In Joe The Movie, I would have thought the Drednoks would have had at least a couple brain cells to rub together to realize that to Cobra-La, they were disposable!)

If you take COBRA as a metaphor for Man's tendency to be greedy, callous, selfish and bloodthirsty, then it makes all the more sense. COBRA exists. Strangely enough, I was almost recruited by some real-world COBRAs. They were subversive salesmen to the core in fancy suits with slick but very dubious-looking documentation. They didn't have assault rifles or tanks or jet fighters, but their manner made me wary enough to turn them down. By the way, the name of their front company was one of Serpentor's past lives. And that's all I'll say about them.

Cobra Commander's existing Joe backstory and Ironblood's are incompatible as far as I can see. The years C.C. was fathering Billy Stateside, Karl Veder was running around the world gathering the Red Shadows (q.v. "Sky Raider"). I don't think the same person could have been working both terror organizations without one knowing the other. Until Blood Day, there hadn't been any major Red Shadow operations in the United States proper, so perhaps the Shadows knew about Cobra's American activities and left America alone, perhaps with some unsteady truce in place. (What if Red Wolf was a mole agent? What Red Jackal was a mole working for Destro and Farouk--and got liquidated when he was discovered!?)

Hmmm I've not seen the movie, but is there any chance the intelligent reptilian race could be explained away as the Kraken?

Judgment Call There, Baron

In the AFM story "As Thick as Thieves", Pythona has a cameo appearance. Look at her and compare her to the Kraken.

Timeline #1

Post by FrustratedPilot »

The following is a timeline of the Marvel US comic continuity that I wrote originally for the Devil's Due reader boards. It is not meant to be all inclusive. The majority of dates are based on the street date of the comic rather than the cover date, as Marvel, DC and other American publishers use later dates to keep the comics on the store shelves as long as possible.

MILESTONES IN THE CONTINUITY OF G. I. JOE

MARCH 1982: Cobra's abduction of Adele Burkhart leads to the Joe Team's first mission against Cobra.
MAY '82: Cobra nearly succeeds in uncovering the location of Joe HQ at Fort Wadsworth.
SEPTEMBER '82: The Joes and the October Guard clash with Cobra in Afganistan.
APRIL '83: A group of Joes are captured by Cobra and are sent to--and escape from--Springfield.
JUNE '83: The Joes are sent to Sierra Gordo for the first time.
OCTOBER '83: Cobra attacks Washington D.C. and soon thereafter, Joe HQ. Deaths of General Flagg, Kwinn, Scar-Face, and Dr. Venom. [Events parallel the first TV miniseries.]
JANUARY '84: Snake-Eyes raids the Silent Castle (to rescue Scarlett).
MAY '84: Cobra Commander is captured in Europe, which leads to his escape from custody in the Rocky Mountains and the subsequent battle in Florida. At the same time as the fracas in the Florida swamps, Storm Shadow, Snake-Eyes and the Soft Master struggle in New York City. [Events parallel the second TV miniseries.] Continuity note: the fight in Florida and its aftermath takes up five issues, even though the story is less than a week overall. Cobra raids McGuire AFB just days after the end of the action down south--although the cover date suggests a September release, we have to assume it happened in May or June.
DECEMBER '84: The Billy Plot within Cobra (to assassinate Cobra Commander) occurs. At the same time, the rebuilt Joe HQ becomes fully operational, and the eight original Joes are promoted.
MARCH '85: Another battle in the Gulf of Mexico takes place, and the Joes' aircraft carrier USS Flagg begins operations.
MAY '85: Storm Shadow and Billy escape from Springfield, as the Joes return to Sierra Gordo on a mission to rescue Adele Burkhart (again).
JULY '85: Cobra Island is formed and Cobra becomes a legal "nation".
SEPTEMBER '85: The first season of the TV show begins its run.
OCTOBER '85: Wade Collins (a.k.a. Fred Broca II) confronts Stalker and Snake-Eyes in Washington; in a separate incident, Firefly and Scrap Iron kill the Soft Master and Candy Appel--Billy is also a victim of the incident but survives.
NOVEMBER '85: Rip-Cord, Storm Shadow and Snake-Eyes infiltrate Cobra Island; Storm Shadow is mortally wounded in the raid (but brought back to life as a consquence of later events). Hawk is promoted to Brigadier General as a result of General Austin's medical retirement. Zartan briefly takes Rip-Cord's identity in order to infiltrate Joe HQ, but he is stopped and made prisoner there.
JANUARY '86: Cobra and October Guard battle in Afganistan again.
APRIL '86: Cobra scientists led by Dr. Mindbender succeed in creating Serpentor. [Events parallel the miniseries premiere of the second season of the TV show.] At about that time, the Joes assault Springfield and Serpentor leads an evacuation of the Cobra base there. In addition, a Joe unit raids Libya to steal a new Russian fighter jet under the cover of a USAF bombing.
JUNE '86: Zartan breaks out of Joe HQ, and Cobra responds by launching a full scale raid on it, destroying it. Cobra Commander and Destro are separated from the Cobra forces in the process, and decide to desert their own army (for the time being). Storm Shadow returns to life in the ruins of Springfield and makes his last break from Cobra, defecting to the Joes.
SEPTEMBER '86: The second season of the TV show begins its run. A Luftwaffe long-range bomber loaded with nerve gas is rediscovered in Greenland and neutralized by the Joes.
DECEMBER '86: The Joes seize a Cobra Terrordrome in Sierra Gordo. At the same time, Scarlett and Storm Shadow rescue Snake-Eyes (who had been taken captive in Sierra Gordo) from the Cobra Consulate in New York.
JANUARY '87: The Joes help Destro reclaim his Castle from Major Bludd. The October Guard and a squad of Joes clash in southeast Asia.
FEBRUARY '87: Cobra Commander and Billy reunite. Rashid the guerrilla boy meets Joes Dusty and Mainframe (he returns in the Destro Trilogy).
MARCH '87: Introductions of new characters (including Lt. Falcon) parallel events in G. I. Joe the Movie, which was to be shown in theaters but in fact only saw home video release.
APRIL '87: Fred VII usurps Cobra Commander and Serpentor; Joes are captured in Borovia. The Joes establish the new HQ in the Utah desert.
JUNE '87: The Joe ninjas go to Borovia to rescue their comrades. The Cobra Consulate is raided by Sierra Gordo terrorists, who are patsies for a Joe team infiltration.
OCTOBER '87: The Frusenland fiasco; Destro establishes his Iron Grenadier private army. A Joe mission to intercept a C.I.A. defector goes awry.
NOVEMBER '87: The October Guard tries to abduct Cobra Commander [Fred VII] on Cobra Island. Three Russian soldiers become Joes for a day in a raid in Iran.
JANUARY '88: The Joes restore an African prince to his throne--with unexpected circumstances.
MARCH '88: The Joe women participate in defusing a hostage drama in Germany.
APRIL '88: The Cobra Island War between Fred VII and Serpentor; Serpentor is killed by Zartan.
MAY '88: Firefly tries to steal a Joe fighter jet but is caught and captured.
SUMMER '88: Joes face disbanding but are vindicated by Adele Burkhart and Destro. A squad of Joes treks to the Himalayas and from there to Vietnam. Another group of Joes, including some new recruits, fight a tragic battle in Trucial Abyssmia.
SEPTEMBER '88: The Joes make an armed air reconaissance of Cobra Island and discover a mass evacuation.
OCTOBER '88: A Cobra unit takes over a Silicon Valley factory and a Joe squad is sent in against them.
WINTER '88: Zartan attempts to assassinate Storm Shadow and Jinx in San Francisco. The Joes and the October Guard team up to stop Cobra from planting Terrordromes in the Arctic.
APRIL '89: Cobra assaults Castle Destro and loses. Destro takes full command of Cobra. The introductions of Tiger Force, Python Patrol and new characters in following comics parallel the events of the fifth TV miniseries (Operation Dragonfire).
SUMMER '89: Cobra begins operations from Broca Beach. Zartan kills the Blind Master; many October Guard characters die in Sierra Gordo.
FALL '89: The Snake-Eyes Trilogy and the fight/fire at the Cobra Consulate.
WINTER '89/'90: The Return of Cobra Commander...he seizes Cobra from Fred VII and kills him along with many other cronies of Fred's.
SPRING '90: Snake-Eyes returns to Borovia. The debacle at Sierra Gordo continues.
FALL '90: The third season of the TV series begins airing. Snake-Eyes and Scarlett reunite. A "Desert Shield" deployment goes haywire, and leads to--
WINTER '90/'91: War in the Desert.
JUNE '91: The Destro Trilogy, which soon degenerates into...
[FALL '91: The fourth season of the TV series begins airing.]
WINTER '91/'92: ...Ninja war at the Silent Castle.
SPRING '92: Three-Front battle: Broca Beach, Cobra Island, and Silent Castle!
SUMMER '92: Firefly's return and his takeover of the Cobra ninjas. Chaos in Borovia again.
FALL '92: Cobra strikes at Joe HQ! Snake-Eyes and Firefly battle on Cobra Island. Continuity Note: except for #119 and #126 (which are self-contained stories) issues 116 thru 131 happen in a very short time frame--probably less than 4 months!
SPRING '93: Scarlett "defects" to Cobra...and the Joes take Cobra Island for good.
SUMMER '93: Transformers Generation 2 crossover as Megatron and Cobra join forces.
WINTER '93/'94: Cobra's fortunes change, and Destro and Zartan are both forced back into Cobra. Destro kills Darklon in Wolfekuckkuckland.
SPRING '94: Star Brigade handles an Armageddon-esque space crisis as Cobra invades Wolfekuckkuckland.
SUMMER '94: The ultimate combat--Cobra Commander versus Snake-Eyes!
FALL '94: Joe HQ is closed and the Joe Team is disbanded.

In my own personal Joe Universe (Which includes Action Force!) Baron Ironblood, hunted by UN forces, allied himself with the Cobra Organization. He became Cobra's operations commander for all of Europe. Donning a costume identicle to Cobra Commander's own, in order to cause confusion and disguise his identity, he then made up the whole "I created Cobra" thing as misinformation. His loyal henchman Red Jackal was given a similar story including the ridiculous "Destoy, destro. . ." thing as well as a slightly altered facemask. Baron Ironblood still serves Cobra (As a custom figure), though Red Jackal is now in Destro's employ, having rebuilt by the Mars corporation. This is the figure I use to represent the new, upgraded Red Jackal:
