Enamels......

so many of you guys rave about them, so thought i'd give em a go!
just started working on a Black Dragon Ninja:

so far just primed & base coat, pics soon! was gonna finish my major bludd today, but left the f#%ker @ home!
any tips, or do i treat just like acrylics? my main worry is how quickly they dry......

I found that the Humbrol Enamel takes ages to dry, whilst the AHC acrylic dries in about 15 minutes. Is that not normal?

never been a fan of humbrol, ive picked up some tamiya which seems to dry quickly.

im guessing you cant do washws with enamel, does dry brushing work ok?

not gonna be a black dragon, have changed the head, still using body from black dragon, with arms from mindbender. will post pics when im finished & you guys can suggest some names! he is a cobra assassin.

My first dalliances that are currently ongoing are using Humbrol, and I agree, it's taking an age to properly dry. So much so I'm calling at the Meadowhall Games Workshop or Modellers Loft tonight for some alternatives.

(that's drastic for me - I normally only venture to the Shopping Centre for birthdays, CHristmases or if the missus has nagged for a good fortnight...)

Dry brushing and washes both work well for me with Humbrol enamels...

Humbrol enamel can take a while to dry depending on the type - matt shortest satin longer, gloss ages... I dont find it a problem as I paint bits one evening and carry on the next...

what do water it down with to do washes?!

enamel thinners or white spirit do the trick... leaving it over for a period of time once mixed will make for a very dirty bitty wash also when you mix it again, depending on the finish you want...

From my old model making days..I think that enamels dry from the "inside-out" & acrylics from the "outside-in" does that make sense to anyone? So enamels dry slower than Acrylics.
I also been told that enamels make a better surface for dry-brushing with with acrylics..I know the shop ( I work in a stationary/art shop) sells a thing called acrylic retarder, which slows the drying process down, so that artists can use them more like oil paints. Aswell as stocking different mediums for textures or irridesent effects..but I don't know how well this stuff would work on models or figures..we do (or did) sell that greenish/yellow glow in the dark paint.
