Reasons to be a collector

Post by Shaunyboy »

I'm going through a patch of being a bit bored of my collection and collecting in general. Perhaps I just need a break for a bit then come back with renewed interest. I was just thinking about a list of reasons why I'm an action figure collector at all. Got onto the notion of why my collection even looks like it does. Some vintage, some new and so many different lines!! I'm interested in your thoughts on the below.

I'm sure this has been discussed on BFTB before and certainly elsewhere, but here's my take on it.

1. Nostalgia - Something you had as a kid and want it back again.
For me, when i decided to get into collecting 'proper' around 1997 I drew up a list of figure names I remembered from my own childhood. AF Blowtorch :blowtorch: was top of the list, then AF Flash :flash: the more I looked into it the more I wanted to get everything I had back again. I'm still going!

2. You never had it before but wanted it 'back in the day' and now you can buy it!
For me this is something like a Roboskull. Didn't have one when I was a kid but now, aged 37, I need one!!

3. You didn't want it 'back in the day' but man...! It's so cool to you now!
You've spent time on BFTB and if you weren't before, you are now converted to the greatness of Palitoy! So, your intentions towards collecting alter.
As a kid I would go for the articulated GI Joe style figures everytime, but since being on BFTB I've formed a deep love for the earlier Palitoy figures. I suppose I'm saying this is a trend in collecting based on something old becoming something new for you.

4. Completists
There's a certain drive I think in really wanting to complete a wave, or a group of figures. Many on this forum have achieved very specific collecting goals of completing wave one, or all the Q Force, Z Force etc. For me, I'm a sucker for sub teams too. If I discover I have three characters that were originally part of a sub team of six, there is nothing on earth that will stop me hunting down the remaining figures!! It may take me a decade, but I'll complete a sub team or die!!

5. The X Factor - No, not the crappy TV talent show!
I mean the combination of design, colour scheme, characterisation and undefinable appeal of some action figures that just jump out at you as a must have.
For me I set out to only collect Action Force and GI Joe up to 1988 as that's the last year I actually bought any figures as a twelve year old kid. Then I saw Bullhorn (1990) on eBay and had to have him!! That led me onto other figures in later years and I don't even know how many I have now.

I'm sure there's more to it than this, just what's in my mind tonight :)

Actually, on point three I'd also add in Dioramas / Collection pics being an influence too. I blame T-shot with his swanky photography skills for making me rush to eBay to buy the figures he makes look so good!!

Other offenders, like Gung Ho-Eddie and the like post up collection pics that make me froth at the mouth!!! Again, adding to the lust for more stuff...:)

Over the last 20 years of collecting Star Wars and GI Joe I've learned that no matter how many toys you have there's always someone with more! The first time I heard of "Army building" was when a customer of mine told me they had 20 Star Wars Tie fighters! I didn't believe them 'till years later when I saw the collections of people like Eddie and Rene and realized it was quite a common thing! What drives me now is the need to complete the run up to about 91, luckily it's a great community and with so much cool new items like Kreo and all the convention stuff there'll always be more to get! When I feel like I'm slowing down or losing interest I read some of the comics which normally reinvigorates me. I've not bought from eBay in about 2 weeks now which I think is the longest period in about 4 years!

Embrace the slow down too Shauny. Let it happen for a while. After a few weeks, or a few months, you'll suddenly find yourself back picking up one or two items. Or roaming around eBay and bidding on one or two things as "they were selling for too cheap". I always have down times - it's natural, but always get sucked right back in!!! Sometimes I even use the down times to try to refocus the collection by selling off a few bits.

Collectors Burn Out (TM) always happens. Whether it be because of a bad trade that sours things, life stuff getting in the way, or just apathy to the hobby. But you always come back.

Great topic!

I too have been feeling the CBO (tm) ;) and I blame the time and economy. I have way too much going on at work and trying to divide my time between work and family is always tricky. That leaves very few hours a week or even months to do anything serious about the collection. I get a lot of new stuff but rarely have time to photograph it for my site or even as a collection update on here. My latest "mammoth" task is going to be a move of my entire collection to a new room, this time with more shelf space and better layout for proper display of my larger vehicles (Defiant, Flagg and 3 Terror Dromes). Add to that a financial situation where every penny has to be turned every quarter after most utility companies and morgage payments have been gathered instead of spread across the year. I know it makes their life easier but its also a pain when it happens from one quarter to another (hard to balance the budget). I still want to have a "play"-account for those odd "this-is-too-cheap-to-pass" deals but since I cant get myself to sell anything from the army building its hard to keep that account going. I tried to sell a few nice pieces but shipping costs have killed every attempt so right now I am just accumulating more and more that really needs to go............just glad that my collection still brings me joy or I fear that it would simply be sold off as we have seen numerous times lately.
Best Regards

I think collecting these retro toys for me simply preserves an era in my life which I wish I could relive. A time where the trials and tribulations of adult life did not exist. If you were fortunate enough to have a great childhood with lots of great memories it is only natural to want to keep as many of those memory's alive as possible. I think I carry on collecting simply to carry on feeling the buzz you used get from back in the day visiting the magical toy shops and having your Action Force toys handed over the counter in exchange for your weekly pocket money. The difference now is that they come through the post in a tatty old Jiffy bags aid for by Paypal. What I would give to go back and visit the long gone "Philips" toy shop back in Dartford once more. Chockablock with Bikes hanging From the ceiling, Subbutteo to the left counter Action Force and Action man in the far corner and Hornby train sets at the rear.
Everything wrapped in brown paper and cello taped together. Prices less memory's that will be with me until the end.
Not here for a long time, just here for a good time.

Another good point.

As a kid the thought of army building never occurred to me! I was quite content with one Red Shadow, one Star Wars Stormtrooper and one 1986 Gi Joe BAT! Hee hee!

Interesting stuff. Very thought provoking, especially Wolforrest. I agree, it is nostalgia, mixed with a small (tiny in my case) disposable income with which to buy the things I always wanted... including the Roboskull (with you on that one Shaunyboy!). I'm also a completist, so variants for me are like catnip - I just bought the variant Security Trooper with the orange highlights - and I'm now grinning like an idiot!
