Hailing from Moscow, Russia, Maxim Sakharov was an average youngster in all aspects. He had an average family and upbringing and his education had no noteworthy attributes either. He had a regular job with a regular salary. Having no interesting hobbies or skills, Sakharov chanced upon a news article that changed his life forever. He read about a material that powered boosted fission weapons and was a core component of creating super powered nuclear bombs.
He became fascinated, even obsessed with the name and the awesome power it possessed. He spent his days and nights studying nuclear power textbooks. He visited nuclear sites such as Chernobyl and later obtained employment as a low level functionary at the Mayak nuclear facility. After many months of painstaking plotting, Sakharov was able to steal a sample to be studied and improved upon in his own personal onsite lab.
He designed terrible war machines and devices of unspeakable horror, yet had no way of putting these designs into production. He would need to test his theories, so little by little, he created a miniature nuclear device powered by the deadly red mercury. He travelled to the frozen wastes of Siberia with his destructive creation, set to perform a test that would never be noticed, many hundreds of miles away from the nearest human settlement.
Setting the timer and retreating to a naturally formed rock shelter, Sakharov watched with insurmountable excitement. The blast ravaged the wasteland, yet was more powerful than Sakharov could possibly have imagined.
The blast destroyed the rock shelter, and Sakharov was trapped beneath the falling debris. His hands and lower legs were completely crushed by the rockfall, and he suffered massive head trauma.
He awoke in the laboratories of Baron Ironblood. Unbeknownst to him, Sakharov was being secretly monitored by Red Shadow agents. His plans had been overseen by Baron Ironblood himself at every stage.
Now an agent of evil, Red Mercury has been physically enhanced with cybernetic limbs giving him many times the strength of a normal human. His skull has been augmented with positronic technology, allowing him to store and instantly recall any amount of complex technical data, as well as regular facts, figures and memories. His right eye has been replaced by a fusion laser, though still capable of super powered sight.
Most inhumanely of all, and the origin of his code name, red mercury was mixed with his bloodstream, and now powered his cybernetic physiology. His skin took on a deathly palid hue, and the stare in his human eye is cold enough to test the resolve of any man who catches it's gaze. Programmed to obey Baron Ironblood and follow the Red Shadow cause to the end, Red Mercury now has near unlimited funding and materials to work with. His first creation is his personal battle transport, the terrifying tripod - The Red Terror.
Working alongside Red Laser, Red Mercury plans to create weapons so powerful that no government on Earth will be able to deny Baron Ironblood's evil demands.

Esteban Rojo's ancestors were famous gunrunners who operated along the Rio Bravo. It was only fitting that many years later, Rojo found himself working for Tony Stark, a once world leader in weapons technology. After Stark's dramatic halt in weapons production, Rojo found himself out of a job and down on his luck. Embittered and angry, Rojo stole many designs and prototypes, and planned to auction them off to the highest bidder.
Kidnapped and brainwashed by Baron Ironblood, Rojo divulged the information, allowing Red Laser and Red Mercury to perfect and adapt the designs for use in Ironblood's military.
Assuming the codename Red Condor after the sacred bird, Red Condor continues his work as a high tech spy and weapons expert aboard the dreaded Shadow Walker.
