how to repaint?

Post by plastik »

after some excellent suggestions on the board I want to repaint a /gi joe headquaters (the one that had a z force repaint).

I thought the idea to turn it into a shadow base was really cool, so I want to repaint it red and black but what is the best paint to use, Is there a paint that gives a similar finish to the red plastic used on the lazer exterminator.
Spray paint would be best if avaiable but I think red gloss model paint would be too shiny

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I don't want to screw it up as I will have to import the HQ from the states to keep the costs down.

Why do they the Z Force versions go for so much, one finished the other day for ?200.

If anyone can help then many thanks in advance

Heh I've just bought one of these to do the same thing myself. I intend to use Citadel Skull White spray paint to undercoat it and then use a can of their Blood Red spray to do the overcoat. Probably have to buy a couple pots of it too to touch up areas. After that it'll be a case of painting in various details (such as the computer desk and shadow language insignia). Citadel do a teemondous range of acrylic paints, have a look in your local Games Workshop to see for yourself.

thanks Brakkart
thats sounds excellent, if there exists any scans for suitable stickers, I could redraw them up as vector eps artwork so that they print out super sharp.

I was also thinking that the base looks more like a big outpost similar to the one that gets overrun by bugs on that alien planet in starship troopers. Now I know for play value the base was designed to be open so that figures could be placed inside and thats fine but the only thing I'm not keen on is the fact that the prison has no roof, I thought by putting a roof on, it might be cool to have a modified repainted cobra bunker or a repainted tower from the check point alpha on top of that as a sort of observation tower.

Any thoughts?

Well you are in luck cos the prison does actually have a roof. The helipad that you see parked beside the base in all the pics of it, fits snugly atop the prison cell to keep those do-gooder AF's sealed up tight inside... and they get noise torture too from heli's landing atop them!! Now all you'll need is a shadow heli... or a really small roboskull!!

Well my base finally arrived in the post yesterday and it was only then that I realised how massive the thing is! As citadel have stopped making spray cans of their blood red paint, this thing is gonna take a loooong time to do with brushes. Photos really don't do this thing justice, it covers my dining table when fully assembled.

I got one of the american ones cos it works out a LOT cheaper than the Z-Force one even with the transatlantic shipping costs. I'm definately gonna need to put up some new shelves to house my growing collection of Shadow and Cobra figures.

Do humbrel model spray paints come in a gloss red, if not maybe the tamiya spray paint designed for the RC cars, probably neither would be a good subsitute for blood red, but does avoid the nosey 10 question grilling about what am I building every time I visit my local games workshop.

could the blood red paint be loaded into cheap hobby airbrush, this might be the route I take when I take the plunge, as I got one cheap from a boot sale and it does seem to give good results although now I'm in two minds whether to turn it into the Z force HQ.

My knowlege is very limited but if I do airbrush for the undercoat would red primer car spray be good or would it be usless on plastic if so would skull white still give the best results?
