Mate, the IN THE BEGINNING movie is f*cking awesome!! But as I say, you need to have watched at least to the end of season three to appreciate it.
It's the Earth/Minbari war, the Battle of the Line, and the reason for the sudden surrender. It ties in to both Valen and future Londo...

This was my take on how the ended up 150,000 years in the past while Earth was in it's infancy, the whole FTL travel etc.

i don't understand how super-light speed travel makes you go backwards in time.
the theory of relativity says the faster you go, the slower time gets so that for a century passing on Earth, you'd only experience like a hundred days or something.
warping space to travel faster is how most SF FTL systems work, warp drive in Trek for one.
that or traveling into some hazily-defined 'other realm' outside normal space-time, like hyperspace in SW or 'the warp' in Warhammer 40K.
but like i said, the 21st century props in what was ostensibly a show set way off in deep space put me right off.

BSG SPOILERS
But it was relative, they weren't from this galaxy, there was nothing to suggest they were from our timeline or our future - it was just assumed that they were human beings.
No, the whole thing was simply set millions of years ago, the survivors of the 12 colonies came to earth and founded our civilization. Hence the similarities to our culture and techonology.
Sundance you must be on about the settlement on New Caprica, where they were struggling to start anew. It probably would seem out of context if you'd not seen the buildup, but at the time it fitted well, they were supposed to be roughing it. Also, I guess the CGI budget only went so far for scenes with a large group of people in a moving vehicle

The biggest screw-over JMS recieved was from the network TNT known mainly for it's westerns and other dramas when they took up B5. They liked In the Beginning so demanded all other films had the same sort of narration whether it fit in or not then after one season of Crusade turned round and said actually we don't do sci-fi we are pulling the plug on Crusade and any other B5 project.

Another blow he had was with the pilot for 3rd series - Legend of the Rangers. They aired it at the same time as the f*cking SUPERBOWL and then refused to fund it due to poor viewer figures!

dunno, boss. all i remember is some peeps running around in a wood with what was CLEARLY a G36 with no greeblies or anything to disguise it and starbuck in a Hummer with some people some place else. it just totally destroyed my suspension of disbelief.
whether it was the future or the past, it still ruined any attempt for me to accept the show when it was clearly 21st century tech.

But with hindsight, it was handed down to us in a repeating cycle. It worked well in context.
The outer space sequences absolutely rocked.
MEGA SPOILER!

I'd forgotten how good that was. I also loved the Pegasus and Galactica in action during the rescue on New Caprica.
However I do wish they had used Stirlings or something less conspicuous

Remember the statement from the programme, "All this has happened before and will happen again" In the Caprica Pilot there is retro stuff mixed with Hi tech.
Also bearing in mind that some stuff may not float your boat. It floats mine!
