SteveD, I'm nto talking about changing the forum font colour. In fact i was told the forum was a working example of a "visible" background" which is why I have used it as a template for the new site background.

Veering back on topic (I'll deal with you later, Irony)...
It seems that all of my font variations weren't the issue, it was the high contrast of the black background causing the problems, so it will be staying white, as was voted.
I was very unsure about the pale background at first but it has grown on me after a few days. I particularly like the way it illustrates the trans-gifs in the galleries.

have to say the background printed onto some nice fabric would make an excellent set of curtains for the toy room.
