Crimson Rage wrote:I still prefer the original ALIEN, by a rather huge margin too. No other film I saw back when I was a nipper still scares me now as an adult except the Ridley Scott original. The atmosphere, the claustrophobia, the tension... all make it a pefect example of the genre to me.

ALIENS... Well I loved it at the time, but to be honest I'm not as keen now. I see it as an 'action film with monsters' rather than true 'horror', and while it has some great "BOO!" moments, I don't get the atmosphere of dread I did (and still do) from the first one.
Agreed 100%. Alien was FAR scarier. And for exactly the reasons you mention. You're stuck, no escape and the fecker is hunting you. Not so much gore, but HUGE amounts of suspense. So good any sequel is going to suck. I couldn't stand Aliens, professional soldiers my ass. If Eagle was in charge the end would have been wayyyy different.

As for 3 and 4, never made it all the way thru with either. One day maybe. Anyone got a good list of Horror/suspense Sci-fi films? It'd make a great poll ;)

I saw Event Horizon at the cinema and nearly shat myself. I don't do well with "suspenseful" films. Got it on DVD a few weeks ago as Ed hadn't seen it (very, very rare to find a film I have seen that he hasn't!) and really enjoyed it this time round (though did close my eyes on some of the scarier bits).

alien is a classic, but i'd have to say john carpenter's the thing ranks up there with poo your pants special effects, which still hold up well today. And of course the very under rated they live another classic alien movie, which has the longest punch up scene when roddy piper and keith david go toe to toe.

"The Thing" is an awesome movie !

it would certainly rank in my favorite scifi/horror movies.

I also liked John Carpenters "Ghosts of mars" not quite a cult classic but still a great action movie !
