thanks for all the suggestions for stands, I guess one of the biggest factors was size, and so in the end I opted for these stands which I sourced from Ebay
Item number: 380113147447
not only are they space saving, but you can army build figures in pairs.
they also fit some of the Indiana Figures, and the new modern Joes (despite my tag, Wraith is a Shadow, and also 3 3/4" high)
they are slightly thinner than the standard Joe stands, so may be more fragile.
here's an example of the stands.
