Alas, we can't do very last-minute bids from home. We have no PC at home but use our phones for ebay - the connection speed/quality means that it can take a couple of minutes for the bid to be confirmed, so last minute bidding often ends in squeals of dismay when the connection is lost/times out.

We are going to get round to getting a computer one day...

I do bid last-minute if at all possible when I'm at work ("creative" use of desk-time...)

The tips about not upping the proxy bid and "double-screening" it are very useful, thanks for that :) :)

yeah, you need to rein Eddie in for a month or two, get a cheap lappy and a broadband connection and then use that.

Annie/eddie - I heartily recommend goofbay sniper tool. It does the snipe for you (when it works!). I use it if I get the feeling an auction is either being shilled, or it's an expensive item. You tell it how much your max bid is, and it does it with about five seconds to go! I've won a good few items from that. But also missed a few, as it doesn't always work!

thanks for the tips guys, i didn't realise there was such an art form to making ebay purchases, one question if i come up against someone who like myself sticks a large bid on straight away and in the last few minutes i find myself being continuously out bid what form of action would you recommend?

Well, I bid the aboslute maximum I'm willing to pay + one bid increment (or thereabouts) and then hope I get it for less!
