the Halo movie got canned because Paramount and Fox (IIRC) couldn't afford it. and Jackson couldn't hawk it to other studios since Sony (natch) wouldn't touch a movie from a Microsoft game, Warner Bros is part of Time/AOL and Disney are tied to Nintendo (IIRC) and no other studio was big enough to be able to afford it.

the budget was north of 200million USD, reportedly.

Fair enough. District 9 was bloody good. Loved every minute of it. It was a bit over the top, but in a funny kind of way. PJ is doing the Dambusters, Tintin and the Hobbit atm. Can't wait to see that. Anyone seen the lovely bones yet?
