I kinda liked the fact you could identify his work instantly , sure his method of drawing faces may at times seem similar , but when drawing the characters you can tell they'd been through hell (the same could be said about Jim Watson) both artists displayed the true grittiness of warfare and both are excellent draftsmen (Watson's Falklands stories should be compiled into a graphic novel someday )

Yeah a lot of Coop's faces reappeared. I was looking at the Shadow taunting Eagle in the cell from Death in South America last year and I thought "Hang on, that's Jake McGarvey from Gung-Ho!"

No, Jamar, please don't retcon that!

Read Jungle of doom last night and have decided that coop rules. His style is comic art but it just always has a hard edge, fuzzchile you're spot on coop's style is instantly recognisable and totaly distinct from the more typical US comic style (not that the us style is bad, mind).

Not sure of any names as I have no back-issues (*sob*), but whoever did the original Z-Force 'mini-comic' and (I think) the "Assault on Atoll-Z" story was my favourite. His crisp, bold lines were beautiful.

Having said that, I must add that I can't think of a BAF artist I didn't like!

Ah! It's difficult for me to check every post as I'm on a PSP right now, so thanks for naming my favourite artist!

I must confess that when Marvel took over the AF comic the art, to me at least, became rather mundane for the most part. They never had anyone as good as Vanyo, John Cooper or even Jim Watson (who's work took a while for me to get used to, but had a distinct character all of it's own).

totally agreed, I think Vanyo is one of the best artist ever on any incarnation of GI JOE in any country.

I think John Cooper just shades it over Vanyo. When i was a kid i always enjoyed reading the stories he illustrated more, though Vanyo's Storm Shadow is awesome.

Has anyone seen the original John Cooper art on ebay at the moment? £35 for one page original drawing - very tempting!
