Great work!
Could the silver medals be a way to correct an incorrect printed medal number underneath?

That's my thinking. Why this is important, though, is unclear.Coosbay_pirate wrote:Great work!

I mean, they are all individual numbers, identifying the figure it came from. But why was that important for Palitoy? So they can see bestsellers perhaps?
They will have sold the batches to individual toy shops, but they would want to be able to see what figures are selling in order to make more.
That makes sense, I suppose.
Can anyone see what's underneath?

Re: Series 1 - 2Para or Helicopter MOC anyone?
Ok.
So, by my reckoning, we have 5 figures who have the silver overpaint:
Australian Jungle Fighter (2 replacing something)
Commando (4 replacing 3 possibly)
Desert Rat
German Stormtrooper (8 replacing 9)
Ground Assault (7 replacing something)
All of these are on the English only cardback, and as far as I can, at least two of them are the early versions of these figures.
The working hypothesis is, then, that the first versions of the figures were produced in the English only cardback, and that the initial print run had a mistake in the medal number. As this would affect Palitoy's tally of what was selling, the number was over-painted and changed before being distributed.
I'm willing to bet that the Palitoy sales rep who sold his stuff through Vectis had exclusively silver overpaint figures.
The other 4 figures that potentially wouldshould have the silver overpaint are:
Frogman T1 (Shield Design on chest)
SAS Squad Leader
Mission Pilot T1 (Brazilian Beaver Variant - Yellow zip on crotch)
British Marine T1 (Beret badge)
Happy to be proven wrong, though.

Tim,
They need to let you loose in the store / archive where all of the palitoy stuff is stored. The place where Dave Tree found loads of info.

When confronted by a difficult problem you can solve it more easily by reducing it to the question. How would the Lone Ranger handle this?
Re: Series 1 - 2Para or Helicopter MOC anyone?
Are there any later versions of these figures without the silver print, but the correct numbers printed on from the very beginning?,ie do we know the silver print was used to correct something to give a uniform number for them all?

No, and yes... so far.SteveD wrote:Are there any later versions of these figures without the silver print, but the correct numbers printed on from the very beginning?,ie do we know the silver print was used to correct something to give a uniform number for them all?
There are (I'm assuming for now, later) foreign cardbacks that have the 'correct' number printed correctly.
Also, there are later English only cardbacks that have the correct number - ebay # 291650853229 for example.
And, the silver 'correcting' number is the actual proper number, not a random number. It is correcting some problem.
We need a greater sample size, and more comparisons. Anyone who has MOC Series 1, please have a look I if you get chance

Re: Series 1 - 2Para or Helicopter MOC anyone?
Steve - your Ground Assault has a silver number on the back, yes?
Could you do me a huge favour and get a photo of the front, I want to know what Type variant it is.
I'm running with the hypothesis that the silver numbers were the first released - so far they only occur with the Type 1 variants (Helmet Decal German, Marine with Beret Badge, etc.).
If we can nail what Type Variant your Ground Assault is, we can identify which Variants came first.

Re: Series 1 - 2Para or Helicopter MOC anyone?
Heres my Ground Assault, with silver number.
The number is 7 over the top of a 9.
Re: Series 1 - 2Para or Helicopter MOC anyone?
and a foreign Ground Assault
with the number 7 printed on it...so the silver 7 is indeed a number change.
