Will the KSK free German hostages?

The KSK (1100 soldiers) is Germany's best military special force. Experts in hostage rescue in so-called "denied areas": hostile areas that are dominated by heavily armed rulers.
This is EXACTLY the current the situation in Slavjansk (East Ukraine). In a barred red brick building the pro-Russian rebel leader Vyacheslav Ponomarev around him the illegally captured four Germans (OSCE observers) (three Bundeswehr soldiers, an interpreter)



Must the KSK now intervene?

Special units of the Bundeswehr (KSK) and Police (GSG 9) have been put on alert . Routine in such situations - but a sign that the "access/strike option" on the table.

The KSK could be in Ukraine within a few hours, launching an operation against the kidnappers from the areas controlled by the pro-Western government.

It's out of the question that Ukrainian special forces would undertake the mission. A senior government official told BILD: "Many of our soldiers would not be willing to fire on fellow countrymen. A special task could only be performed with foreign assistance."

CSU defense expert Florian Hahn (40) told BILD: "When it's the lives of the hostages are threatened you should think about this option. Not before."

The decision must be taken by a crisis team including the Ministry of Defence, Foreign Office and Chancellery.

The elite soldiers of the KSK and the anti-terrorist unit GSG 9 would be at crisis team's disposal, and could then strike without further consultation.
